On Monday, June 29 we hosted a CEFPI evening and beamed with pride as we showed our over 100 guests around our fabulous school. The Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) visits new schools often and our Leader of Learning shared how our building enables us to realise our vision which was gifted to us by the Establishment Board of Trustees. We received a lot of positive feedback about our school and answered lots of questions. So much curiosity was #oresome!

On Tuesday, January 27th, we had our first opportunity as Learning Coaches to explore OrmPS and our Learning Habitats. It was great to see the development of the site and just how close we are to day one! One of the most important aspects of our visit was to move the amazing new Furnware Furniture into the spaces. This provided us with freedom to set up the Learning Habitats in our collaborative teams with a workable layout for our first day. We are super pleased with the flexibility and mobility of the furniture so we can redesign the spaces as needed for different learning purposes. Each of the Habitats is looking outstanding and we are all very excited for day one!

In line with the Greenstar rating for our indoor spaces our outdoor areas are designed to be sustainable. Our learners will be intimately involved with the design of our outside spaces. We envision our outdoor spaces will include gardens, worm farms, composting and a natural playground. We want our learners to make connections with their environment, to be able to consider the world we are a part of and look to how we make decisions to improve the physical and social environment of our school, our community and our world. In September of 2014 Di and Caro went on a tour of some local ‘EnviroSchools’ and were inspired by the possibilities. Ormiston Primary School is currently on the waiting list to be an official part of the ‘EnviroSchools’ program.

We are super excited to be part of this new school where we are building an Innovative Learning Environment so we can touch futures. Ormiston Primary School will reflect the latest concepts of design in education as it seeks to provide an innovative learning environment to serve the rapidly growing Flat Bush community.

The key competencies will form the foundation of teaching and learning. Our school will challenge traditional views of education with staff using excellent pedagogy to create effective learning opportunities for all students.

OrmPS: touching futures on PhotoPeach

The community will be encouraged to take an active part in the life of the school as strong community links form a supportive environment in which learners grow.

See the Photopeach slideshow for images which capture the progress of the build.

A special feature of our school will be the incorporation of a deaf provision in partnership with the Kelston Deaf Education Centre. We were joined by students from the Papatoetoe East Deaf provision and their teachers and it was a very special chance for us to meet some of our learners for next year and for our young people to see the site in this embryonic phase of construction. The lovely folks from Arrow Construction did a marvellous job taking us on an interactive tour and provided the learners with a morning tea- very generous of them.

It is incredibly fascinating to watch this building go up in front of our eyes each day from our temporary home at Ormison Senior College. We will take possession of the keys in January and all is going according to plan.
