We have been very busy with sports so far. In term one, cricket sessions with Marcel from Tennis Auckland were for LH1 and LH4 – big thanks to Mark Lewis from Ace Sport for contacting our school and organising this for us. A group of 20 learners (from across the school) took part in a one day rugby session with Jarrod and the team from East Auckland Rugby which was held at our school. We had a mixed rippa rugby team for years 5 and 6 that took participated in the Eastern Rippa tournament. We played five games and almost every learner in the team scored a try in at least one of the games played. Mr McNeil organised for Football in Schools on a Friday during iBreak 2, which saw over 40 learners from across the school take part. They learned lots of football skills.

This term, we had three teams with over 30 learners from Year 5 and 6, participate in the Football Field Day. One of the teams won all their games. Thank you Mr Dyer and Mr McNeil for taking them. In the meantime, we are busy training for a Rugby 7s Field Day which is coming up next week Monday 29the May. As well as that, a mixed hockey team will be taking part in a Hockey Field Day next month. We are also starting up a Gymnastics team to take part in a Field Day in August.

Our sports trolley is now in action and has been very busy this term. It is filled with sports gear such as hula hoops, sports balls (basketballs, footballs, netballs, rugby balls, tennis balls), moon hoppers, balance boards, paddle boards and lots of other gear for learners to use during each iBreak. Learning coaches will supervise but the sports monitors from each habitat are assigned a day and are responsible for giving out at the beginning and collecting all the gear at the end of each break.

Learner Led Conferences:

In addition to the reports which our Learning Coaches for the learners who have been with us since Term 1 (available online in the learner’s learning pathway), all learners and their families had an individual ‘Learner Led Conference’ in Week 11 with a Learning Coach. Thanks to all the families that attended their child’s Learner Led Conferences. It was pleasing to see the confidence that our learners are already demonstrating when sharing their learning. We received a lot of positive feedback about these conferences. A big thank you to all of our educators who prepared the learners for these learning celebrations. This type of conference is for the learner to discuss their progress and achievement with their family, guided by a Learning Coach. We are so proud of all of our learners!

We encourage all of the families to continue to visit the learning pathways and blogs as an ongoing opportunity for your child to formally discuss their next learning steps and what they are already capable of doing in their learning.

As part of our ‘WeInteract’ time during iBreaks, OrmPS is pleased to add some exciting experiences. This term has seen the start of our ‘clubs’ in our school. The clubs have been devised by some learners in Habitat One. The learners had to develop, pitch and recruit successfully in order to lead one of the inaugural OrmPS clubs. There are six clubs that are operating in the first half of this term. The clubs are organised and run by the learners for other learners that are interested. The clubs are supported by one staff member. The clubs take place during one of the iBreak’s during the week.

The clubs are as follows:

NZ Sign Language

Art

Zumba

Desi Dance

Samoan

Jump Jam

In addition, Te Manawa, is being monitored by learners during each iBreak. These learners work under the supervision of Mr Dyer and help other learners issue their best fit books.

It is a great time for all of us to gather together as a whanau, cement our expectations for attending events and share learning. In addition, we have a longer school focused assembly every second Tuesday where mr McNeil shares school wide learning, gives our certificates and we practice our waiata. We are fortunate to have our lovely NZSL interpreters with us each day, not only for communicating with the deaf learners, but also for the entire school to be truly inclusive while learning more NZSL at the same time. However, we have made some changes to maximize our iExplore learning time. Our new schedule for huis and assemblies:

We have had an exceptional first week at OrmPS. With well over 100 foundation learners joining us on Day 1. We began our week with a pohiri (Maori welcome & blessing). Our pohiri was unique and we were fortunate to have members of the Nga Thai iwi lead and guide us through the special procedure. It was an invaluable experience for everyone and helped to make our first day memorable in a culturally appropriate way. Many of our learners families stayed for our pohiri- welcome, speeches, waiata and the blessing of the building. Learners then made their way to their Learning Habitats with their Learning Coaches and began their new, exciting learning journey. This week the learners were introduced to our logo story, the 4 vision principles, the OrmPS daily schedule, New Zealand Sign Language, the wonderful learning spaces in the school and of course, each other. Parents and families have been invited into our habitats whenever they are on campus and our open door policy remains. It is inspiring to see the curiosity sparked and the questions are rolling on in- we say ‘bring it on’! We can’t wait for week 2 to welcome nine new learners to join our learning community. One word, our word = #orseome.
