We started Term 2 with a reminder about Road Safety – both when travelling by foot and with wheels. Five enthusiastic members of our Travelwise team joined Eadaoin from Auckland Transport to wave placards at passing motorists on Ormiston Road. They were thrilled to receive over 30 toots of appreciation.

Our #oresome road patrollers are continuing to do a fantastic job with helping our learners (and parents) to safely cross the road outside our school. In Term 1 we held some road crossing workshops with LH1, 2 & 4 and it’s great to see that many of these young learners are now educating their own parents and grandparents on how to use the patrolled crossings.

Don’t forget to use the refuge crossing on Kerrykeel Drive, opposite our top field. This road is getting extremely busy so it’s best to support our learners to keep safe and cross where there is a safe place to wait in the middle of the road.

NYLD (National Young Leaders Day) May 25th May 2017

Fifty Year six and some Year five learners from Habitat 6 headed off to the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau for the day to participate in the annual NYLD. Hundreds of learners from other primary schools throughout Auckland also participated in the event including our Year 5 and 6 learners from Habitat five. The theme for this years NYLD was ‘I am a seed born of greatness’ which was unpacked throughout the day by the numerous guest speakers who shared how they grew their seed. Intertwined throughout the different talks were a number of Maori proverbs such as Ngaro (not letting others opinions affect the way you see yourself), kakano (within everyone is the potential to make the world a better place) and ruia (creating and being in a great environment is how we grow).

Learners listened to speakers such as Daniel Flynn, creator of ‘thankyou’ water and products who discussed how he came up with his idea and went about making it happen. ‘thankyou’ products are now sold throughout Australia with 100% profits going to villages in underdeveloped countries to provide basic clean drinking water. Another highlight was listening to Adam Gard’ner and Duane Major who initiated the very successful Give-A-Little campaign last summer for New Zealanders to buy a beach. The day was topped off with an amazing performance for the New Zealand band ‘nomad’ who performed two songs, including their latest international hit ‘Oh my my’. The day was enjoyed by all the learners ….

“I really enjoyed how they (the presenters) explained what they did and told us that it was a group effort to make things happen” Sonny.

“I really liked it how they put games in the middle of it to entertain us and I really liked how they had a DJ at morning tea and at lunch for something to listen to” Azure.

Every year in May we celebrate New Zealand Sign Language week.

This year at Ormiston Primary School we kicked off the week with a special Hui.

LH5 prepared and practiced special performances the whole week. We had:

1. comedy drama

2. a short drama giving out a message

3. NZSL words teaching

4. a dance and song fully in NZSL.

Angelena and Taylor were our wonderful MC’s. Blaine and Jona shared an interesting presentation. Joe, Lui, Jona and Blaine made us all laugh with their funny dramas. Rawinia, Anthea, Ruilin and Jean-Baptiste shared some animal and time signs with the school. And to wrap it up, all of LH5 signed the song “can’t stop the feeling” and it looked #Oresome!!!

The LH5 staff prepared some fun activities for OrmP School. The learners helped and supported the learning coaches. The winners from each habitat received blue tokens. It was great to see all the learning coaches from LH1,LH2,LH3, LH4 and LH6 involved in the activities.

Michael Wi, our Maori tutor did Maori storytelling in NZSL. Many learners came to LH5 to enjoy watching the interesting story.

We had lots of fun in NZSL week. We all got a chance to show our amazing talents!! We even had NZSL picture and colouring competition. The winners got a special certificate and prize in Hui time.

Hope everyone enjoyed the #Oresome NZSL week!

As part of our Being #oresome Program @OrmPS Mr Dyer has been leading a group of talented young people- our OrmPS Learner Leaders. They have written a little about who they are and what they do:

Who are we?

Leon, Justin V, Aleena and Jasmine

What do us learner leaders do??

We discuss plans to help younger learners become efficient learners and manage their time wisely. We are also role models for the next generation of learners.

What we do to improve the school?

We are being to support Mrs Doidge in the reception area so Learning Coaches get a break. We also support younger learners in their learning and participate in learning projects across the school. In addition, we are leaders in our Being #oresome groups which are vertical groups of learners in our school who learn about our PB4L approach together. For example, last week we learned about ‘Curious Playing’ together.

What do our Being #oresome groups do?

We learn about our different vision principles and how we can use them as a school. Our #Oresome groups discuss and come up with ideas of how we can use PB4L when we’re learning, moving, meeting, playing, eating and well being.

What does it mean to be #oresome?

It encourages us to know that we all are learning coaches and learners. Being #Oresome encourages us to be leaders and it helps us remember that you can be a role model and a leader without being told and even if people don’t think you are.

When do we have them?

We have them on Friday every two weeks. Each learner is in a PB4L group with a few learning coaches in their group. This helps us to collaborate with other people and share our knowledge with them too.
